    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks fell at Friday’s start, with the S&P 500 trading at 12-year lows, after the government said it would hike its stake in Citigroup Inc. and on word the economy contracted more than previously thought in the fourth quarter. “With no positive quarter on the horizon, we are smack dam in the middle of what will be remembered as one of the worst recessions of the last 100 years,” said Dan Greenhaus, an analyst with the Equity Strategy Group, Miller Tabak & Co. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 134.12 points to 7,047.96. The S&P 500 Index shed 17.82 points to 735.01 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 18.88 points to 1,372.59.
