\nThe energy drink Red Bull is under investigation in Sweden after reports at least three people died after drinking it.<\/p>\n

The Swedish National Food Administration (NFA) is heading the investigation, and has issued a public warning, telling people not to take Red Bull mixed with alcohol, or after heavy exercise.<\/p>\n

The three healthy young people who died are all thought to have drunk Red Bull shortly before their deaths.<\/p>\n

But the energy drink’s manufacturers said there was no proof the deaths were linked to Red Bull.
\nTwo of the victims died after mixing the drink with vodka.<\/p>\n

One woman, named only as Therese, 31, collapsed on the floor of a nightclub in March this year.<\/p>\n

Her boyfriend John Andersson told a national newspaper: “Suddenly she just fell down beside me. Her heart had stopped and she was completely lifeless.<\/p>\n

A third person died after drinking several cans of the energy drink following a heavy workout at the gym.<\/p>\n

Precaution<\/p>\n

Doctors at Stockholm’s South Hospital will lead the investigation.<\/p>\n

Anders Glynn, of the NFA’s toxicology department told BBC News Online: “The public warning is a precaution.<\/p>\n

“At this point, its just a suspicion and we really don’t know why , as it is a suspicion the physicians have reported to the press.”<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for the manufacturers of Red Bull told BBC News Online: “This is one story that’s been not based on facts, and has been fuelled by speculation.”
\n She added the Swedish NFA had issued the public warning “without having the full information”.<\/p>\n

“They need to be seen to be precautionary, but there’s no proof that Red Bull is harmful when mixed.”<\/p>\n

She said the company would be working with the NFA to prove the drink was safe.<\/p>\n

Catherine Collins, of the British Dietetic Association, said: “There’s been quite a lot of research looking at are the effects of Red Bull on the heart and circulation.<\/p>\n

“And they have shown that if you take sufficient Red Bull, and other drinks that are performance enhancing, you can lower blood pressure and that may be the cause of the problem.”<\/p>\n

Concerns<\/p>\n

Last year, the coroner at the inquest into the death of 18-year-old Ross Cooney from Limerick, called for more research into the effect of energy drinks.<\/p>\n

Ross died of sudden adult death syndrome after a basketball match. Hours earlier he had drunk three cans of Red Bull.<\/p>\n

The Times newspaper reports Norway, Denmark and France have classed the drink as medicinal because of its high caffeine content.<\/p>\n

Red Bull also contains taurine, a building block for protein and helps digest food. A small amount is thought to be beneficial, but some studies have suggested a small risk to health.<\/p>\n

Last year, one billion cans of Red Bull were bought worldwide.<\/p>\n

The UK’s Food Standards Agency said it was not planning an investigation.<\/p>\n

People who mix alcohol with energy drinks like Red Bull can often feel less drunk than they really are, a study suggests.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian team compared the reactions of 26 men given either alcohol, Red Bull or a combination of both in three drinking sessions.<\/p>\n

Although the men perceived themselves to be less impaired when taking the mix physical tests proved the opposite.<\/p>\n

The study is published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.<\/p>\n

The team, led by psychology professor Maria Lucia Souza-Formigoni of the University of Sao Paulo, said those who mixed the caffeine drinks and alcohol reported an increased sensation of pleasure and a reduction in sleepiness.<\/p>\n

This had led some to suggest that the combination might reduce the depressive effects of alcohol.<\/p>\n

But the team’s results showed a “considerable disconnect” between the subjects’ perceptions and objective measures of their abilities.<\/p>\n

Professor Souza-Formigoni said: “In Brazil, as in other countries, people believe that Red Bull and other energy drinks avoid the sleepiness caused by alcoholic beverages and increase their capacity to dance all night.<\/p>\n

“Many nightclubs offer this mix among their cocktails.”<\/p>\n

Her study in some ways reflected this assumption, with subjects on the combination of Red Bull and alcohol reporting less perception of headache, weakness, dry mouth and impairment of motor coordination.<\/p>\n

But objective measures of coordination showed Red Bull consumption did not reduce any of the negative effects alcohol has on coordination or visual reaction times.<\/p>\n

Professor Souza-Formigoni said: “In other words, the person is drunk but does not feel as drunk as he really is.<\/p>\n

Fellow researcher Professor Roseli Boergnen de Lacerda, of the Federal University of Parana, said: “The implications of these findings are that this association of alcohol and energy drinks is harmful rather than beneficial as believed by consumers.”<\/p>\n

She added that, because people thought they were less impaired than they really were, they were more at risk of car accidents.<\/p>\n

The team said drunk drivers were dangerous, not only because their reactions were delayed, but because their capacity to evaluate risks was also affected.<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for Alcohol Concern said that people needed to understand that the sensation of well-being did not necessarily mean that they were unaffected by alcohol.<\/p>\n

She said: “This is a small study but it does highlight the risks of excess drinking in relation to personal safety.<\/p>\n

“Alcohol affects physical coordination and impairs an individual’s ability to gauge how safe they are in a particular situation and take appropriate action.<\/p>\n

“So any drink that heightens a person’s perception of being in control, when they are not, could increase the potential risk of harm.”<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for Red Bull pointed out that all impairment or deficits, referred to in the small study, were entirely due to alcohol consumption and not Red Bull.<\/p>\n

She said the firm did not promote the use of the energy drink with alcohol.<\/p>\n

She added: “Red Bull strongly advocates the responsible use of alcohol at all times.<\/p>\n

“The position of Red Bull, in line with responsible adults and driving organisations worldwide, is that it is absolutely wrong to drink alcohol and drive at any time, regardless of whether alcohol has been mixed or not.<\/p>\n
