\n DUBAI, Nov 22 (Reuters) – The United Arab Emirates central
\nbank cut its certificate of deposit rates by as much as 20 basis
\npoints on Thursday after investors piled pressure on the
\ndollar-pegged dirham currency to appreciate.
\n The central bank cut its six-month and nine-month
\ncertificate of deposit rates by 10 basis points to 4.40 percent
\nand 4.30 percent respectively, the 12-month rate by 15 basis
\npoints to 4.15 percent and the 18-month rate by 20 basis points
\nto 4 percent.
\n The central bank has no benchmark rate. Banks use the
\ncertificates as a guide for lending on the interbank market.
\n Investors have been pressing the central bank to let the
\ndirham appreciate against the U.S. dollar after Governor Sultan
\nNasser al-Suweidi said last week he was considering dropping the
\npeg and tracking a currency basket.
\n “The forward prices show that flows into the dirham are very
\nhigh,” said Simon Williams, HSBC’s senior regional economist.
\n “Certificate of deposit rates have been cut to discourage
\nfurther inflows,” he said.
