I can't comment in cntoinuation of Mr. Spurgeons post, so I'll do so here. Mr. Spurgeon calls the cartoons a cheap and unnecessary stunt, that doing so in the context of that particular political climate was provocative. The cartoons were published in a provincial Danish newspaper, and quite frankly I do not believe that many non-Danes are qualified to call a judgment, that is based on an analysis of the Danish political climate 5 years ago. Here are my 2 cents on that subject:Denmark have a long legacy of mocking religion. It is generally accepted, that if you do not consider something to be your sacrament, then you should feel free to be as sacrilegious as you want to be in your treatment of it. Not to mock or insult the believers, but because ‘hey! It’s out in the public square, you might as well have fun with it…’. I do not know a single Christian, who has serious beef with the tons of cartoons mocking their faith or even the porno-film about Jesus (the second coming of Christ, the manuscript must have practically written itself). In the past 30-40 years a lot of Muslims have been immigrating to Denmark, and wherever you have a lot of Muslims, Islam will have some visibility in the public square. Fortunately a lot of Muslims have embraced and passionately defended the ‘if it is not your sacrament, then you can be as sacrilegious as you want to be’-principle, that has dominated religious debate in Denmark since before they came. Amongst the greatest defenders of the cartoons ranks the Danish-Jordanian Muslim politician Naser Khader. But then again some Muslims, they are just not that into Islam getting equal treatment from cartoonists.I do no wish to hurt people, who genuinely don’t understand what is going on and don't understand why people are mocking their cherished faith, BUT… We have traditions to preserve.I do not wish to flush centuries of cultural traditions down the drain because of minority amongst a wave of immigrants. I do wish to pass our society’s great legacies on to future generations (be they Muslim or non-Muslim). I am not asking anybody to adopt these traditions, but I am willing to force-feed immigrants with the idea that they now live in a country, where anything that is displayed in the public square might be mocked in the public square. We need to give Islam equal treatment, which means we are to mock Islam, if we are to maintain our long and proud tradition of not giving two craps about how you feel about how I feel about your religion. Our debate-culture is not just an inheritance, that we should feel free to soil away. It is a legacy, that we owe it to posterity to preserve.
